About DateAtlas

What is DateAtlas?
DateAtlas is a dating intelligence platform that provides real data on dating apps, safety scores, costs, and cultural insights for 30 countries. We help travelers, expats, and digital nomads make informed decisions about dating abroad.
Who is DateAtlas for?
DateAtlas is built for anyone dating internationally — solo travelers, digital nomads, expats, people in long-distance relationships, and anyone curious about dating culture in other countries.
Is DateAtlas free?
Yes. Core features including top 5 apps per country, safety scores, cost data, English proficiency levels, and our full blog are completely free. DateAtlas Pro (coming soon) will offer expanded data like Kink Index, Nightlife Scores, and raw data exports for $7/month.
How often is DateAtlas updated?
We update our data quarterly. App rankings, safety scores, and cost indices are refreshed every 3 months from our source datasets. Blog content and country guides are updated on a rolling basis.
Can I contribute to DateAtlas?
Absolutely. If you have firsthand experience dating in a specific country, spot incorrect data, or want to suggest improvements, reach out via our contact page. Community feedback directly improves our data quality.

Data & Methodology

Where does your data come from?
We aggregate data from five primary sources: Numbeo (cost of living and safety), EF EPI (English proficiency), Google Play Store (app ratings and downloads), World Bank (demographics and gender ratios), and ILGA World (LGBTQ+ legal data). See our methodology page for full details.
How is the Dating Score calculated?
The Dating Score (0-100) is a weighted composite of seven factors: safety (20%), cost affordability (15%), English proficiency (15%), gender ratio (10%), LGBTQ+ acceptance (15%), cultural openness (15%), and app coverage (10%). Each factor is normalized to a 0-100 scale before weighting.
How accurate are the safety scores?
Safety scores are based on Numbeo's Crime Index, which aggregates user-reported data from residents and visitors. While no safety metric is perfect, Numbeo is one of the largest and most frequently updated crowd-sourced datasets available. We clearly label any estimated data.
Why is my country not listed?
We currently cover 30 countries with the strongest data coverage. A country may be missing if we lack sufficient data from our sources to produce reliable scores. We are continuously expanding coverage — check back or suggest a country via our contact page.
What does "estimated" data mean?
When a primary data source lacks information for a specific country and metric, we use statistical estimation based on regional averages and correlated indicators. Estimated values are always clearly marked so you know the confidence level.

Dating Apps

Which dating app is best for international travel?
It depends on the country. Tinder has the broadest global reach, but local apps dominate in many regions — Badoo in Eastern Europe, TanTan in China, Pairs in Japan. Check our country-specific guides for the top-performing apps in your destination.
Do I need a local SIM card to use dating apps abroad?
Most major apps (Tinder, Bumble, Hinge) work with any internet connection. However, some regional apps may require a local phone number for registration. Our country pages note which apps need a local SIM.
Are dating apps safe to use in every country?
No. In countries where LGBTQ+ relationships are criminalized, apps like Grindr have been used for entrapment. In some regions, dating app scams are prevalent. Always check our safety guide and country-specific warnings before using dating apps in a new country.
Is premium worth it on dating apps abroad?
Premium pricing varies dramatically by country — Tinder Gold can cost $5/month in Southeast Asia vs. $30/month in the US. Premium features like Passport (changing your location) can be particularly valuable for pre-arrival matching. We list local premium prices on each country page.
Can I use dating apps before arriving in a country?
Yes, if the app supports location changing. Tinder Passport (premium), Bumble Travel Mode, and Hinge location settings let you browse profiles in your destination before you arrive. This is a great way to set up dates ahead of time.

Safety & Travel

Is it safe to date while traveling solo?
With proper precautions, yes. Follow our safety guide: meet in public, share your plans, arrange your own transport, and research your destination's safety profile. Millions of travelers date safely abroad every year.
What should I do if I feel unsafe on a date abroad?
Leave immediately. Go to the nearest public, well-lit area. Contact local emergency services (112 in EU, 911 in Americas). Reach out to your embassy's 24hr emergency line. If you cannot speak the local language, use a translation app or call your embassy first.
Are there specific dangers for women dating abroad?
Women may face heightened risks depending on the destination. Check safety scores, use women-first apps like Bumble, share your live location, choose the venue yourself, and understand local cultural expectations. Our safety guide has a dedicated section for women.
Is it safe for LGBTQ+ travelers to use dating apps?
This varies enormously by country. In over 60 nations, same-sex activity is criminalized. Check our country pages for LGBTQ+ scores and legal status before using any dating app. Use VPNs and discreet app modes in hostile environments.
How do I avoid romance scams while traveling?
Never send money. Video call before meeting. Be wary of anyone who love-bombs you, refuses to meet in public, or has a too-perfect profile. Check our Avoiding Scams section in the safety guide for region-specific scam patterns.
