Russia is unusual among the countries we track because international apps don't dominate. The swipe-style giant Badoo was itself founded by a Russian entrepreneur and has a massive local user base, while Mamba — one of the oldest dating platforms anywhere — remains a fixture with a Russian-language interface and broad regional reach. Around them sit other domestic platforms: the social-network-plus-dating Fotostrana, the regionally popular and marriage-leaning Tabor, the personality-matching Teamo and the photo-swipe Topface. Tinder is available and used, but mostly in Moscow and St Petersburg, where it carries a slightly aspirational, 'Western' perception.

Dating culture in Russia reads as comparatively traditional, with more conventional gender-role expectations than you'll find across much of Western Europe, and many of the popular platforms tilt toward serious or marriage-minded relationships rather than casual dating. Language is central: the leading home-grown apps operate primarily in Russian, several regional platforms work best with (or effectively expect) a local phone number, and conversations default to Russian outside the international-facing pockets of the big cities. The gender balance leans toward more women than men, which shapes the dynamics on most platforms.

For visitors, Russia is inexpensive to date in — we estimate a typical date around $66, roughly half the US benchmark — and our everyday-safety read is a fairly solid 6.2/10. The bigger caveat in our view is online scam exposure: romance and financial scams are reported more often than average in the data and reporting we track, so the usual safeguards matter more here — be wary of anyone who quickly professes feelings, asks for money, or refuses to meet by video.
